Juneau
Juneau, Alaska's capital, is the third largest city in the state. Much like the rest of Alaska, Juneau is full of contrasts: a sophisticated cosmopolitan city in the heart of the Tongass National Forest. Nestled at the base of towering mountains overlooking the Gastineau Channel, the community's rich culture and history is displayed throughout the town and in several local museums. Scenic trails are available to hike through temperate rainforest, tidal beaches and up mountains capped by alpine meadows. Juneaus location offers convenient access to Glacier Bay National Park, Tracy Arm Fjord, the Taku River, Admiralty Island & Pack Creek Bear Preserve, and much more.
There are two volunteer projects in this region:
.: Regional Amphibian Habitat Project
This project is a regional amphibian habitat survey. The goal of this project is to establish monitoring sites throughout southeast Alaska. Focal areas for research will be established in ten subunits delineated in southeast Alaska: Glacier Bay, Lynn Canal, Taku River, Stikine River, Unuk River, Prince of Wales Island, Kuiu/Kupreanof Islands, Baranof Island, Chichagof Island and Admiralty Island. Transport between survey locations will occur via a 23 welded aluminum skiff. Survey of the focal areas will be conducted on foot. Volunteers for this project should be physically fit, observant and patient with biting insects. Bushwhacking from site to site will be the norm and the amphibians we are targeting are often very cryptic. We work rain or shine!
Project Duration:
This is a six week project from June 1st July 15th.
Number of Volunteer Positions: 2
Accommodation:
Volunteers will be camping for the duration of the project and will generally move to a new camp site each week. Campsites will be staked in the bush and there will be camp stoves for cooking.
.: Regional Estuary and Riparian Forest Surveys
This project is a regional survey of estuary and riparian forest habitats. The purpose of this project is to gather data on wildlife habitat qualities that will aid in the interpretation of aerial imagery and future modeling of habitat values. This project will have similar logistics to the amphibian project concerning data collection, fitness, and attention to detail. Volunteers should be comfortable working in bear country.
Project Duration
This project is for the full month of August: 1st-31st.
Number of Volunteer Positions: 2

Volunteers will be camping for the duration of the project and moving in between sites periodically. There will be no facilities. All campsites will be staked in the bush. Volunteers should be comfortable working in bear country.
