China Resource Pack Research and Links
China is a massive ancient country, rich in culture, tradition and landscapes. China's economic growth and current process of "modernization" is of a speed, scale, and scope unprecedented in human history. But education is struggling to keep up, of the 10 million births a year 46 percent are going without basic education, and this is much higher in rural areas. Part of this modernization is to bring the English language to the masses in order for China to be more involved with the world. Without volunteer English teachers, the opportunity would not be available to many who want to learn the language.
The Global Volunteer Network currently has teaching English opportunities available through our partner organization in China. This gives volunteers a chance to make an important contribution to the people of China and while doing so gain an in-depth experience of the country and its culture that will stay with them for rest of their life. This particular program is unique to alternative programs that we offer. Education is regarded extremely important so children are sent from the local villages into the cities to be schooled. The schools are well resourced and volunteers are sought in order to help with conversational English. It is the wish of the Chinese nation to become bilingual.
"China's main problem in foreign language education is the manner in which foreign languages are taught - students are often taught to read and write excellent English but rarely get any oral practice. As a result English teachers graduate from university speaking poor English and mispronouncing most words and passing along their mistakes to their students. So all the other English teachers and I certainly felt that our presence was needed to expose both the teachers and the students to "real" English. During my 4 months with the kids, I definitely felt their English improved, but of course there are limitations to what you can teach children in only 4 months. However, in addition to the linguistic aspects I also feel that the opportunity for the children to be around and interact with a foreigner is an important educational experience in terms of cultural exchange and awareness of the world around them." - Maria Hole (Volunteer).
