Volunteer in Honduras
The Global Volunteer Network currently has opportunities to work with rural communities in the Central American country of Honduras. Volunteers can become involved with teaching or building projects. This program will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Honduras, while gaining first-hand knowledge about the country and its culture; an experience that will stay with you for the rest of your life.
.: The Program
Building Project: Tasks on the building project include renovation, laboring, painting, decorating, making bricks, building walls, digging, and building wooden playgrounds. Volunteers will assist with cement mixing, sand sifting, cutting wood, and transporting building materials; there is little equipment and it is mostly manual work. The building projects are to help families build or improve their homes and schools, and the community decides which projects are in need of assistance. Be prepared to be very patient and flexible, and to get your hands and clothes very dirty.
Teaching Project: On the teaching project, volunteers can help with teaching English, sports or computers. There is no set curriculum for teaching English in rural areas, but past volunteers have left behind their notes, recommendations and teaching materials, both at the schools and with our partner organisation, so that volunteers will have a good idea where to start and to give some continuity to the teaching process. Bringing teaching aids is suggested, as well as leaving those behind for further use in schools. To participate in the teaching program, volunteers need to stay for at least one month.
Volunteers will stay in homestays with families who have been specifically chosen. All of the families are in La Esperanza, a few miles away from the schools and building project, since those are located in the countryside. We have found that living in a town where bank services, restaurants, internet cafes and other services are available makes the volunteers' life more enjoyable and also gives them the opportunity to meet volunteers from other countries, with whom to travel and visit the rest of the country over weekends.
.: Program Location
This program is based in La Esperanza, located three hours by bus from Honduras' capital city Tegucigalpa.
.: Program Schedule
School holidays are different every year, but as a rule of thumb they run from early December until early February. It is possible to help at private schools during this time, which have different holidays, and the building projects will still be available, but volunteers won't be able to help in the teaching program otherwise. Volunteers may start the project on the first or third Monday of each month.
