Do I need travel insurance?
As with any overseas traveling, insurance is recommended. For the China program it is compulsory to have travel insurance which also includes medical or health insurance as part of the deal.
Can I purchase a part-month cover?
No - insurance may only be purchased for full month blocks. These month blocks can start on any date, not just on the 1st of the month.
How long is a month block?
Months are equal to one calendar month. For example, if the first day of cover is 5 April 2008, and cover is for 1 month, the last day of cover will be 4 May 2008.
How do I pay an extra US $100 to extend my insurance by one month?
You can do this at http://www.volunteer.org.nz/confirm/flexiinsurance.php.
If I decide to travel before or after my volunteer time, will I be covered by GVN insurance?
Yes, you may extend your insurance cover over non-volunteering travel during the same trip.
If I decide to extend my volunteering stint once I arrive, can I also extend my insurance cover?
Yes, please contact the GVN insurance representative to extend your cover.
If I have purchased for insurance for my travel dates one month from now, will I be covered for cancellation insurance from today's date?
Yes, cover will be in place from the date that the flights are booked, provided that the premium has been paid.
Can my friend, who is not a volunteer, get GVN travel insurance?
Insurance can only be purchased if the non-volunteer is a volunteer's spouse or dependent child/children.
Does GVN insurance cover emergency medical evacuations?
Emergency medical evacuations are covered subject to the conditions in the policy details.
Is there an age limit for insurance coverage?
The age limit for insurance coverage is 80 years. Additionally, volunteers aged between 70 and 80 must be certified fit to fly and travel by their medical practitioner.
Am I eligible for insurance cover if I volunteer in an area with political instability?
Eligibility of cover for aspects such as civil unrest is dependent on how the country is classified by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. For example, if a country is classified by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as having civil unrest, evacuation for civil unrest is not covered by the policy. In this instance, parts of the policy not relating to civil unrest, such as lost luggage, would still be covered.
Is airfare covered in the event of a death or serious illness of a family member prior to departure?
Yes, if that forms part of the financial loss incurred and the relative's (as defined) serious injury, illness or death satisfies the conditions of the policy (eg, must be under 80 years of age).
