Volunteer Feedback

"My grasp of Chinese is (slowly) increasing and I expect to have a basic grip on conversational mandarin by the time I leave."

Terry - China Volunteer

"I think the best way of describing it is chaos!!! The school is basically built around a small field with 3 single storey classroom blocks at the top end. It is miniscule, but is amazingly attended by nearly 1000 students ranging in age from 5 to 18 years.

Katharine - Nepal Volunteer

"On my free time I go on hikes to jungle, waterfall climbing and just sitting on the watchtower observing monkeys and birds."

Andre - Ecuador Volunteer

Volunteer in New Zealand

Dusky Dolphins seen in Cook Strait

This program is located in one of the most picturesque cities in the world. You will be joining a small team of volunteers working to preserve, monitor, and re-establish our natural environment here in the Wellington region. Prepare yourself to encounter the challenges of environmental restoration in our native forests, along our wild coastline, and on our coastal islands.

.: The Program

Volunteers will form an integral part of our wildlife monitoring and research projects. Our program area extends from Wellington's south coast through to Northland. There are two separate teams on the program; both are headquartered in Wellington, but one team will participate solely in local projects while the other will also participate in programs further afield. Your time will be spent at sea on our research yacht, exploring coastal inlets on sea kayaks, replanting native bush on several harbour islands, taking part in predator control, and participating in bird and fur seal surveys.

New Zealand's capital city, Wellington, is perched on the shores of a deep natural harbour surrounded by wooded hills. The Wellington region encompasses diverse landforms, indigenous plants and wildlife, and an extensive and varied coastline. Wellington is a centre for threatened species management and has a number of captive breeding facilities working with some of our most rare bird, reptile, and insect species.

NZ Program Staff:

Robert Ashe - NZ Program Director
