Volunteer Feedback

"I'm going to miss starting off my day watching a few hundred Ghanaian children drumming, singing, and marching into their classrooms."

Eric - Ghana Volunteer

"The school is great, I'm feeling Western guilt daily, coming from schools whining about not having IT labs, to here, where the kids don't all have chairs, or pencils. I can't believe how much trust they've put in my teaching ability, I hardly feel inspirational."

Laura - Ghana Volunteer

"The teaching is going well, I teach in quite an organised school. The other teachers are all very interested. The kids and classes are very different, some quite hard to teach, others very keen."

Nerine - Nepal Volunteer

Volunteer in the Philippines

A marriage of Eastern and Western cultures in a paradise-like setting, the Philippines has been described as the best-kept secret of the Orient. Azure seas cradle its seven thousand islands; a hundred cultures spawn its hundred tongues. The country is full of contrasts; a study of western style democracy and iron-fisted regimes; peopled by men and women of deep piety in the midst of liberalism; land-marked by skyscrapers beside old stone churches and walled cities; a place where one finds in its lakes the smallest commercial fish and in its seas the largest fish in the world; an environment where both the earth's biggest raptor - the Philippine (monkey-eating) eagle - and the smallest primate - the tarsier live. Every visitor gets to taste and experience the world in a day in the Philippines.

The Global Volunteer Network's partner organisation in the Philippines is a newly established NGO, composed of youthful national leaders, professionals, and volunteers. Their objective is to assist and develop local Filipino communities through environmentalism, education, integration, research and volunteerism. Their programs are nationwide, assisting local communities with their basic needs, focusing on children and the environment.

.: The Program

The volunteer opportunities are in the following areas:
  • environmental programs
  • teaching programs
  • health program
  • cultural exchange
  • school building and maintenance program
Environmental Programs
Mangrove Reforestation: Help rebuilding the depleted fish stocks caused by mangrove deforestation and destructive fishing practices, by helping with reforestation, seedlings preparation, community education and other related activities.
Rehabilitation of the Sierra Madre Range: Due to deforestation and the resulting lack of tree cover, landslides killed hundreds after recent typhoons. Volunteers in this program will plant trees for at least four hours a day, and also participate in the area's environment education campaigns and community activities.
Pasig River Rehabilitation Advocacy: Every last Sunday of February, the country's National Capital Region hosts its only internationally-sanctioned marathon, significant because it embraces environmental advocacy for the rehabilitation of the Philippine's most historic and important waterway, the Pasig River. Volunteers are needed for community campaigns and marathon administration for months before the race, and on race day itself volunteers are needed to help as support staff.

Teaching Programs
Day Care Centres: Volunteers teach children ages 3 to 5 in a day care centre for 2 to 4 hours a day. They will teach children the alphabet and basic concepts like colours, shapes, sizes, days of the week, and the like through songs, stories and play.
Elementary and High School : Volunteers on the program teach elementary and high school students in public schools for two to four hours a day. Subjects taught include English, maths, science, health, and basic computer skills (only in schools where computers are available). Volunteers may teach on their own but there will be a local teacher available to assist.

Health Program
Philippine laws provide for a community health centre in each of its 41,000 barangays (communities). Sadly, not all communities have their own health centres and those that have one are woefully under-equipped and understaffed. Medically-trained volunteers may help in community health centres and hospitals, and may perform medical tasks depending on their skills and qualifications. They may also conduct trainings and workshops to train the people on hygiene, health care, reproductive health care, first-aid, and other health concerns. Volunteers may also help set up clinics in public schools and train teachers and students to become effective health officers and clinic custodians.

Cultural Exchange
Volunteers live with a Filipino family. This is a good opportunity for volunteers to learn about Filipino culture, lifestyle, language and people. We can arrange home stays in many parts of the Philippines. During this period volunteers will have the opportunity to participate in local festivals.

School Building and Maintenance Program
Volunteers on the program will be doing manual tasks of building. Your time will be spent repairing school buildings, painting roofs, walls, chalkboards, desks, teaching aids and other equipment. Volunteers may help in the installation of water pumps. Volunteers may also help in setting up of libraries. They can start by asking donations of old books from their families, friends, towns, parishes and former schools. They can encourage their popular use by the students through class visitations and regular story-telling sessions. The objective is to introduce to public school students the joys of using a library, which most do not experience until college, if at all.

.: Program Location

The program is centred around the quaint and laidback town of Dumangas, Iloilo. It is one of the oldest towns in the historic island of Panay. It prides itself as the town with the first stone Church in the island and the site of a famous battle with invading American forces. At present, Dumangas is a small town but is unparalleled in hospitality and endearing in its charm. It is a town of eight rivers, a long and winding coastline, a few caves, and a million smiles. It was the recipient of the Galing Pook (literally translated "good place") national award as having the best peace and order situation in the entire country in the year 2004.

.: Program Requirements

Volunteers for the Philippines program must:
  • be 18 years or older

Volunteer programs start every 1st and 20th of each month, and can volunteer from between 2 weeks and 5 months. Volunteers will stay in Manila for the first two days for orientation (Program, Placement and Volunteer Work) and training (Language, Culture and History). On the third day, volunteers leave for their placements. They will get further orientation and local language training for three days before actual volunteer work.
