The Global Volunteer Network
The Global Volunteer Network is a private, Non Government Organization (NGO) based
in Wellington, New Zealand. The Global Volunteer Network was launched in December 2000
by Colin Salisbury, its Founder and Executive Director, after spending time volunteering
in Ghana, West Africa. While he was there he saw the tremendous difference volunteers can
make in helping local organizations achieve their goals. Upon returning to New Zealand he
spent some time researching the different volunteer organizations around the world and was
amazed at how expensive some programs were and how limiting many were in terms of volunteer
options.
The Global Volunteer Network currently is offering volunteer placements through
our partner organizations in Ghana, Ecuador and Nepal.
Our vision is to support the work of local community organizations in developing countries
through the placement of international volunteers.
Our philosophy focuses on empowerment, not pity or charity. We believe the people of each
culture know and understand what is appropriate for their community. It is the Global
Volunteer Network's aim that volunteers work to empower people with the skills
and knowledge they need to become self-sufficient. Many volunteers say that working side by
side with the local people was a life-changing experience.
