Cambodia lies completely within the tropics; its southernmost points are only slightly more than 10� above the equator.1

Cambodia gained independence from France on the 9th November 1953.2

In 2005, exploitable oil and natural gas deposits were found beneath Cambodia's territorial waters, representing a new revenue stream for the government once commercial extraction begins in the coming years.3

More than 50% of the population is less than 21 years old.4

The export commodities of Cambodia include clothing, timber, rubber, rice, fish, tobacco and footwear.5

The Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) estimates that there may be as many as four to six million mines and unexploded ordinances in Cambodia.6

In 2004 the average life expectancy in Cambodia was 56.5 years.7

Malnutrition rates in Cambodia are currently at 38%.8

Cambodia has the highest infant and under-five mortality rates in the region, at 97 and 141 per 1,000 live births, respectively.9
