Volunteer in Vietnam
The Global Volunteer Network currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization in Vietnam. Volunteers have the chance to care for orphans in orphanages and care centres in central Vietnam, centred around Da Nang (Danang). Volunteers also have the opportunity to help in Language Centres. All of the placements offered are working with government run programs. This program will give you a chance to make an important contribution to the people of Vietnam, and to gain an in depth experience of the country and its culture that will stay with you the rest of your life.
.: The Program
The volunteer opportunities are in the following areas:
Orphanage Placements
Volunteers will be allocated to a placement by our partner, although they will take into account any preference that you specify on your application form. Regardless of which placement you are in, you will still fly into Da Nang, and have your orientation there. In some orphanage placements, you will also have the opportunity to teach in Language Centres in the evenings.
Cahors Orphanage (Hoi An): Opened in 1992, and is home to 30 children aged from 10-20 who have lost either one or both parents. The program aims to develop the children's English skills, encourage sports or games, and there is also scope for a work experience program and art lessons.
Cu Lao Cham Island (Hoi An): Volunteers in the Cu Lao Cham Program are expected to teach English as well as arts and crafts to orphans, disadvantaged children and local people on Cu Lao Cham Island, 20 km from Hoi An beach.
Tam Ky Placements (Quang Nam Province): Volunteers in Tam Ky, 70 kilometres south from Da Nang, have the opportunity to work with four community organizations: The Home of Affection, the Vocational Traning Center, the Provincial Baby Orphanage, and the Education Center for Tam Thanh Community.
Red Cross Day Centre (Da Nang): This day centre has been open for nearly three years and provides physiotherapy and resources to disabled children in the local area. Volunteers typically work teaching English and songs for two hours during the morning, and on Games and Crafts during the afternoon.
Social Assistance Center (Quang Ngai): Volunteers help with orphanage and English teaching programs. The centre is the home for almost 100 disabled children and orphans, and volunteers will teach English, arts, crafts, songs, and sports.
Hue Placements: In Hue, some 75 km north of Da Nang, volunteers can participate in three different programs - working in orphanages, working with children with disabilities, or teaching English to students from various social assistance programs around the city.
At present, the program at the Dai Loc Orphanage has been postponed, possibly re-opening in early 2006. The Dai Loc orphanage, 40 km from Da Nang, was launched in 2003 by the local government, and holds 40 children. The teaching programs are mainly focused around English, crafts, arts, music, sports, and games.
Language Centre
Volunteers teach English at foreign language centres in Da Nang and Hoi An. Volunteers are expected to assist with Vietnamese native English teachers to teach English to young students. The students come from high schools and universities, as well as full-time workers. Teaching will involve helping high school students with their English examinations to colleges or universities or equipping them with necessary English skills for conversations at work or higher education. A volunteer is expected to teach 10 classes per week (around 15 hours). Class sizes are from 15 to 20. Teaching material is provided. For this program, volunteers are accommodated in a rented house with volunteers from other programs.
.: Program Locations
Da Nang is Vietnam's fourth largest city, located on the banks of the Han river. It is an hours flight from Vietnams major international airports: Ho Chi Minh (in the south) and Hanoi (in the north). Famous landmarks in Da Nang include China Beach, the Marble Mountains and the museum of Cham Sculpture. Hoi An is a picturesque riverside town, 30 km south of Da Nang. It was one of Asia's most famous ports in past centuries, and still retains a sense of history and has plenty of interesting historical attractions. Tam Ky, the provincial capital of the Quang Nam province, is located another 30 km south, and is famous for the Cham Towers. Quang Ngai is located further south of Tam Ky and is a capital of the Quang Ngai province.
