:: Habitat and Location
The coastal region of Ecuador has become known as a region of high biological diversity and endemism, and also as a prime example of the worlds conservation "hotspots" where high biodiversity coincides with high rates of human-caused destruction of native ecosystems and subsequent endangerment of endemic species. A number of species which have disappeared elsewhere are relatively abundant at The Tito Santos Dry Forest Reserve.
Dry forests are strongly seasonal. During the dry season many plants shed their leaves to conserve water, and animals gather around the remaining water holes. Once the rainy season arrives, the area returns to life in a few days.
As a part of a pioneering effort to conserve and study coastal ecosystem, while encouraging community and national development, our partner collaborated with Hacienda Ganadera Don Juan to create the Tito Santos Biological Station. The Station is composed of approximately 2000 hectares of tropical humid, semi-deciduous, and deciduous dry forest.
The Station was founded in September 2001 and is located in the Ecuadors Manabi Province, one of the most important areas for conservation in the world due to the destruction of 99% of the natural forest.
:: Tito Santos Reserve Current Projects
Projects underway at the recently established Reserve include:
Mapping of the Reserve - A land use map will be drafted in order to define the physical limits of the reserve and its natural resources. The land use map will be used as the basis for the development of a potential uses map.
Cabin Construction - The cabin will be constructed with local materials. It will accommodate groups of 10-14 visitors. The station will consist of field cabins for lodging (complete with bedding and mosquito nets), and a main station house with dining, kitchen and work areas.
Tito Santos Plant Center - A preliminary native plant nursery and trail system will be established. Trees from this nursery will be used to reforest degraded areas around the reserve. Increased activity on this project will begin In December with the commencement the rainy season.
Agroforestry and Agriculture - A fruit nursery will be established. This project will be expanded to include plantations of fruit trees. Increased activity on this project will begin In December with the commencement the rainy season.
Experimental Tree Plots - A tree plot will be established in order to research growth rate and other information.
