Kenyan Children's Fund

The Global Volunteer Network's Kenyan Children's Fund was set up to support the work of our partners in Kenya, Africa. We are raising funds to benefit the orphans and destitute children of Nairobi.

Our aim is to improve the quality of life and education for disadvantaged children. Of these children, most are orphans and many more are destitute and in need of care and special protection. 1.7 million children in Kenya are classified by their government as orphans. Conflict and AIDS have also taken their toll throughout the country and have contributed to the disintegration of traditional community structures, which previously would have cared for these orphans.

As of 2003 the HIV prevalence in Kenya is at an alarming 6.7%. 650,000 are children orphaned by AIDS. The orphanages that we support are contributing to the reconstruction of lives and placement of individuals. They rescue hundreds of orphans, street children, abused and abandoned children by providing shelter, food, clothing, education, and medical care.

Even more serious are the obstacles faced by those located in the slum of Kibera. A heavily polluted landscape, riddled with soot, dust, and open sewage routes, the slum is unsanitary and its inhabitants suffer from poor nutrition. Deaths by disease and conflict are only outnumbered by the high toll of AIDS: of 2.2 million HIV positive Kenyans, roughly 1/5 live in Kibera.

Our partners in Kenya seek to offer a home to needy children who live in these areas. They wish to provide a sustainable solution to the problems of accommodation, and to motivate childcare givers to design intervention programs that offer long-term solutions.

Participating in our climb, and raising money, is an integral part of our plan to help construct an orphanage in Kenya.
