Frequently Asked Questions

+ How fit do I need to be for El Camino de Santiago?

The walk we will be doing will vary from day to day but, by most, is graded easy-medium. We will cover 206 KMs (128 miles) over the course of 9 days. We will average 22 KMs a day (13.6 miles).

You will want to train before this walk. It is important to be able to walk for 6-8 hours with out too much of a problem, at a reasonable pace.

+ What is the climate like in May?

The Camino de Santiago is located in the North of Spain (in the Galicia region) and this area of Spain is mild. During the month of May temperatures in Spain range anywhere from 11-18 Celsius (50-65 Fahrenheit).

+ How can I fundraise?

There are many ways of achieving and surpassing your financial goals. Once we have received your application and application fee we will send you a fundraising information pack that will help you to fundraise for your adventure in Spain.

Ideas and examples of how to raise money for your adventure include: Friends and family, your work-place, clubs, raffles, quizzes, fun-runs, and parties.

+ Why go with Global Volunteer Network? Why not a Commercial Trip?

Commercialized trips do not offer the unique opportunities our trip provides.

Firstly, our partner travel organization, Fresco Tours, has organized other fundraising hikes and is well respected within the traveling industry. Participating in our hike relieves you of the anxiety of searching for a reliable and established travel organization.

Secondly, this trip gives you the chance to meet other people who feel passionate about helping the global community. The participants of this trip will automatically have a unique bond because everyone involved will be working together to achieve two goals, complete El Camino, and raise funds for children in Romania.

Thirdly, you will be able to witness, firsthand, where your money will go. Not only will you be able to see one of the most beautiful parts of Spain as you walk through the Spanish country side but you will also have the opportunity to visit the orphanage where the children are living.

Finally, and most importantly, your adventure will allow our partner organization in Romania to improve the lives of the children in their charge. While participating in 'the opportunity of a lifetime' you are also ensuring that orphans in Romania will live a better life.

+ What and Where is El Camino de Santiago?

Located in Northern Spain the Camino de Santiago (The Way of St. James) began as a pilgrimage to the tomb of the Apostle James (now the city of Santiago de Compostela). This pilgrimage was the most important Christian pilgrimage in medieval times. It was one of only 3 pilgrimages on which all sins would be forgiven.

Over the last thousand years the pilgrimage has expanded from a spiritual quest, for some, into a personal journey of exploration, adventure and simplicity for others.

"Pilgrim, leave what you are able; take what you need." This simple phrase graces the entrance to a pilgrim's refuge house along the route and speaks to the point of El Camino de Santiago. This is a path, an adventure, through the Spanish countryside but also a personal journey. Join us on this age old pilgrimage to Santiago and then on to a different, but extremely important, journey to see children your funds will benefit in Romania.
