GVN in Ecuador, 2002
|
Join our Ecuador Forest Expedition in July 2003. We will be spending two weeks at the
Jatun Sacha and Guandera reserves. The expedition will be looking at the impact of deforestation
in the tropical amazonian rainforest and inter-Andean high altitude cloud forest.
You will be part of a team of 10 volunteers and 2 GVN staff members. The expedition aims to
further our understanding of the environmental impact of deforestation in different forest areas.
:: Our Partner
The expedition will be working through our Ecuadorian partner who was establishment in July 1989, by the government of Ecuador.
It is private, non-profit Ecuadorian foundation. Besides protecting ecologically important forest
habitats, the foundation's biological stations are nationally and internationally recognized as leaders
in the development of innovative and concrete programs in community agroforestry, and environmental education.
:: The Reserves
Jatun Sacha
The Jatun Sacha Biological Reserve in the Province of Napo in Ecuador. It was created in 1986 out of the need to
have a conservation, investigation and education center to host scientists and students interested in the
tropical rainforests.
The present size of this reserve is 2,000 hectares, and was reached thanks to donations from various individuals
and organizations concerned with the rapid loss of the tropical rainforests in the Amazon and the world.

Guandera
In response to a research project conducted by Galo Tipz from La
Universidad Tcnica del Norte, that recognized the unique composition and
extremely high diversity of such forests, motivated the Foundation to take urgent
action to save the last remnants of inter-Andean forests in Ecuador. Thus, in 1994,
they established the then 80 hectares Guandera Biological Station.
Guandera is in the midst of the last remaining extensive stretch of high
altitude cloud forest, an area in which less than 4% of the original forests
were left intact. This forest is found only on the inter-Andean slopes (in
the valley between eastern and western cordilleras) and the Reserve draws
its name from the large Guandera (Clusia flaviflora) which dominate this
unusual and threatened forest.
