GVN Community Fund - Ecuador Projects
Our Ecuador partner was established by the government in July 1989, as a private, non-profit and locally based foundation. The foundation's biological stations are nationally and internationally recognized as leaders in the development of innovative and concrete programs in community agro-forestry, and environmental education. These stations also provide practical experience for people interested in contributing to our partner's conservation activities and projects. The stations are situated in ecologically sensitive areas, in the Choc-Darin-Western Ecuador and Tropical Andes biodiversity hotspots. In these areas, as little as one or two percent of the original forest cover remains, and our partner play an important role in preserving the few pristine areas that remain.
The foundation has recently raised the funds to buy 60 hectares neigboring the Amazon reserve, and their next priority is Bilsa. Within the Bilsa Reserve, there are approximately 250 hectares of land that belong to other owners (or colonos) who are also currently selling. As this land lies within the reserve, our partner is trying to raise the funds to purchase it. The land surrounding the Bilsa and Amazon reserve costs $ 350 USD per hectare (approximately 10 000 m2 or 2.2 acres). The costs for the land surrounding the other reserves are:
Amazon: $ 350 USD per hectare (which is 10,000 m2 or 2.2 acres).
Guandera: $ 1000 USD per hectare (this is because these lands are good for agriculture, with lots of topsoil).
La Hesperia: $ 550 USD per hectare.
Congal: $ 700 USD per hectare.
